I splurged an extra 10euro of the department's money so I could ride in comfort in the first-class cabin of the TGV. The world speed record on a national rail system was set by a TGV Atlantique trainset on 18 May 1990; the top speed was 320mph (515kph), more than half the speed of a jetliner.
