This year commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first controlled
powered flight, on December 17, 1903. The Wright Brother's National
Memorial in Kitty Hawk has a small visitor's center, two new temporary
exhibit halls for the centennial, and a large stone monument atop the
hill from which the Wright flyer took off.
The inscription around the base of the monument reads,
"In commemoration of the conquest of the air by
the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright conceived by genius
achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith".
