Our arrival time worked out perfectly; after we unpacked and settled in,
we joined Rivendell's 5-6pm daily prayer hour. As today is Good Friday,
it was a Tenebrae ("shadows") service, remembering the pain and betrayal
of Jesus' darkest hours on earth. The service was very simple, mostly
Scripture reading interspersed with periods of silent meditation.
After every passage, a candle would be snuffed out, and finally when
reading of Jesus' crucifixion, the Christ candle in the centre
was snuffed out and taken out of the room. Commemorating the resurrection,
the Christ candle was then brought back in relit anew. The Word of God
was so powerful and moving to me as I marvelled in the juxtaposed
fulfillment of both God's justice and God's mercy in the death of Jesus
Christ for our sins. This is what I want to tell people about!
