Self-portrait.
The lens is the Canon 50/1.8 "nifty fifty" with a full set of tubes
(12+20+36mm Kenko extension tubes), which put the front of the lens
about two inches from my eye.
I bounced the 420EX flash (on E-TTL) off a big styrofoam sheet about
a foot from my eye, at about 45deg from camera.
This image was chosen out of about 150 frames for composition,
focus and lighting. Getting the extremely small plane of focus
placed right was very difficult, since I couldn't look through the
viewfinder! The plane of focus is also really a spherical shell,
since I'm not using a macro lens optimized for a flat field.
I like the texture you can see in the iris.
